Marie Cirafesi

The Crazy Quilt of the Century - Made by Marie Cirafesi of Eagleville, PA

Family wedding outfits and Mom's hope chest finds from 1940 and beyond... Marine emblems and uniform buttons from Dad's service in World War II... Doll dresses and accessories from 1950's childhood treasures... Snippets of aprons, hankies and even business clothes that stretched from one decade to another...  These are but a few of the dozens and dozens of treasured family fabrics and personal memorabilia that I had tucked away in closets for more than 60 years.  Little did I know that my quarter-century dream of a Crazy Quilt made from them would become reality in the new millennium thanks to the talents and time of a lifelong friend, quilter and embroiderer Marie Cirafesi of Eagleville, PA.  As the pictures of Marie's finished work of art proclaim, she blended my lifetime finds into a fabulous momento for me.  She wove together satins, silks, laces and many other old materials into a marvelous design that not only showcases the crocheting talents of my mother and other long-gone dears, but also spotlights Marie's own incredible wizardry with needle and thread.  All the needlepoint flowers and details you see throughout are hers. In keeping with Crazy Quilt century-old traditions, she detailed the creation with spider and web, too!  Beyond what I provided from my belongings, Marie added other special embellishments - contributions from 8 true blue "forever friends", including herself.  You can see the group of us when we were 16 in a photo placed right in the middle of the quilt.  It's next to one of my favorite touching poems by Flavia that describes true friends as being woven into our lives.  The quilt is now hanging in a prominent place in my Arizona home, a constant reminder of the people, places and textures that have colored my life, as well as the creative, loving friend who blended them together for me. It's what I call "The Quilt of the Century".
